Feeling in control results from a regular heating servicing as you are aware your gas boiler should be more efficient for the following year and is not emmiting any unsafe gases.

More energy efficiency tips

September 23, 2008

In the United Kingdom most dwellings have central heating. With a few minor changes to the central heating controls the system can be made much more energy efficient. Hot water production can be limited to certain parts of the day by installing a timer switch or heating system programmer. Your bills will be significantly reduced as you will only be using gas when it is actually necessary.

Room temperatures can be better controlled by adding room thermostats once more reducing energy usage. You will only be warming the room to keep it at the ideal warmth level. Likewise, various radiator thermostats called TRVs can be installed which enable you to control each room’s warmth level separately.  This will help you to keep the bedrooms cooler than the main living room.

Older boilers have higher gas consumption charges when compared with the newer varieties. A central heating boiler has a typical lifetime of 15 years. Substantially less energy is used by modern boilers as they are more efficient. The most efficient gas boilers in terms of saving money are called condensing central heating boilers which use 30-40% less fuel. Exhaust gas heat is used to heat cold water cutting the energy consumption profile of the heating boiler. There is further good information in that awards are frequently available for  houses which want to put in one of these boilers for the first time.

Gas boiler safety

September 16, 2008

If you smell gas act quickly – it is poisonous.

The common advice you should take is:-

  • open any doors and windows to improve ventilation
  • make sure that the gas supply to an appliance has not been left on or that the pilot light has not gone out
  • do not use matches or naked flames
  • turn the gas supply off at the gas meter
  • do not smoke in the are
  • do not turn any electrical switches on or off – including light switches and doorbells as they can create a spark and ignite the gas

This also applies if carbon monoxide is on the loose.

Gas boilers are very safe but need regular servicing to ensure that no problems arise.

Energy companies pay out large dividends

September 5, 2008

Pressure for a windfall tax on energy companies intensified today.

Research commissioned by the Local Government Association (LGA) revealed that altogether the six biggest companies paid £1.635bn in dividends last year – a 19% increase on the 2006 total of £1.378bn. This is not a position to defend!

According to the research by consultants SQW,

Centrica increased its dividend payout from £409m to £478m,

EDF from £105m to £110m,

RWE Npower from £37m to £250m,

and Scottish and Southern Energy from £400m to £474m.

Whilst you are paying your next energy bill you might want to consider these numbers. If however you are a sheareholder you may have less of an issue.

In the circumstances you should ensure that your boiler is regularly serviced to ensure that it is efficient and not wasting gas.

Scottish assistance for new central heating

September 5, 2008
The Scottish government is particularly active in helping Scots to get new central heating. Here is an example of one of their programmes.
clipped from www.scotland.gov.uk
The programme provides the following package of measures:
  • A central heating system and advice on how to use it
  • Loft, cold tank & pipe insulation; cavity wall insulation; and draughtproofing
A carbon monoxide detector (except where heating system is electric), a mains-linked smoke detector and a cold alarm
Advice on best use of energy in the home
An optional check of entitlement to state benefit
A “central heating system” is defined as a system which provides warmth to two or more rooms through a series of connected radiators or ducts linked to a central boiler, or from a series of electric storage heaters and controlled from one central point.

    Home insulation options

    August 28, 2008
There are many options to insulate your home and save energy.
    clipped from www.energysavingtrust.org.uk

Because around half of heat loss in a typical home is through the walls and loft, it’s worth checking whether yours are insulated. Use this section to find out more about the different types of insulation and glazing or use our search tool to locate your nearest insulation installer.

    Cavity wall insulation

Around a third of all the heat lost in an un-insulated home is lost through the walls. Cavity wall insulation is a fantastic way to significantly reduce the amount of energy you need to heat your home and could save you around £120 a year on your fuel bills.

    Solid wall insulation

If you have solid walls you can either insulate them with external or internal insulation, saving you up to £380 a year on your energy bills.

    Floor insulation

Gaps and draughts around skirting boards and floors are simple to fix yourself with a tube of sealant bought from most DIY stores. You could save around £40 a year by insulating your floors.

    Fitting a new boiler

    August 13, 2008

Any combination boiler is a modern-day efficient form of condensing boiler. It renders water when needed and is the most popular form of boiler in the UK.

As they have specific set up requirements it is essential that you have an heating audit conducted before you complete on the buy. The gas boiler installation regulations are complicated and need to be studied by a trained heating fitter. It is sometimes more difficult to install a condensing rather than a non-condensing boiler for various reasons.

The output gases from the flue tend to be cooler and hence less buoyant than for an aging boiler type an easily seen plume can often be the result as the cooler gases will condense more rapidly. The output gases can then wet areas near to the outlet, this can impact on neighboring houses, in the worst case scenario the output plume can impact people traveling by.

You could find that your existing flue, whilst suitable for a noncondensing gas fired boiler, is not acceptable for your new boiler. To complete the installation you could find that the flue will need to be changed. The flue cannot be shared and must be for the solitary use of condensing appliances.

An external drain point is required to enable the removal of the condensate which will form within gas fired boiler.

Many of these issues have been faced by other householders and there are simple solution is to overcome them. The benefit of using a trained fitter is that they will know of these. You should remember that these one-off installation costs should be offset against the yearly reduced running costs of the re placement condensing gas fired boiler.

Whilst you are having the new gas fired boiler fitted there are some alternatives for the installation. Due to the different fitting requirements a change of location is often necessary. Specific examples are where a condensing heating boiler is to replace an open flue or back heating boiler. You will see that these older boiler forms are not installed on an outside wall with an existing heating boiler flue.

Providing you do not install the gas fired boiler in the primary living room most other rooms are acceptable. Typical illustrations include the loft, bedrooms and of course the kitchen.

You can install a gas boiler in the loft as long as the system is of the sealed form. In this situation the loft has to have a lower down attic ladder attached to the hatch. The attic would need to have capable lighting and a boarded floor to facilitate access to the gas boiler. These points are required to enable an engineer to maintain and service the heating boiler.

    Grants and schemes

There are various energy efficiency schemes and grants that are available.
The main scheme is a home energy efficiency scheme known as Warm Front in England, Warm Deal in Scotland, the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme in Wales and the Warm Homes Scheme in Northern Ireland.
You may also be able to apply to the local authority for a grant, loan or other type of help for home improvements.

The maximum individual grant that can be made under these home energy efficiency schemes is, in England, £2,700 (or £4,000 if oil-fired central heating is to be installed). In Wales, it is £2,000, in Scotland, it is £500 and in Northern Ireland, it is £750. The maximum enhanced grant is £3,600 in Wales (or £5,000 if oil-fired central heating is to be installed). In Northern Ireland, it is £4,300. In Wales, a partial grant of £500 can be awarded.

These tips could shrink your heating costs

    July 15, 2008

Most homes are already centrally heated. Without touching how they are operating a few small-scale changes to the heating system controls can definately improve the system’s gas economy. Most importantly the fitting of a timer or heating programmer will mean that the central heating and hot water are switched on only at the moments of the day you want them. Without this you could see that your system is turning off and on during the daytime when hot water is not essential.

Energy use is reduced by adding room thermostat to more finely manage the overall warmth level in the house. Large reductions in gas use can be achieved by limiting energy use to the level necessary to hit the target room heat level. Each areas warmth level can be individually manipulated by fitting radiator thermostat valves. This will help you to keep the bedrooms cooler than the main living area.

Older central heating boilers have higher energy consumption charges when likened with the newer varieties. You should expect your heating boiler to have a life of about 15 years. Substantially less energy is consumed by modern boilers as they are more efficient. Condensing boilers will use up to 40% less energy. Cold water is warmed by heat from the exhaust gases cutting the heating boiler gas demands. There is additional good information in that awards are often available for dwellings which want to set up one of these central heating boilers for the first time.
